Fingernails

STEP 1:
Meticulous Natural Nail Prep

"P.E.P.":
P - Perform A Manicure

Shape and smooth the extension edge of the nail with a Kanga™ File.
Remove true cuticle from the nail plate with CuticleAway and a cuticle pusher.
Have the client wash their hands with liquid soap and warm water. Towel dry.
Double check for stubborn cuticle and debris by pulling back the lateral folds (sidewalls) of the nails with your fingers and, using a curette, gently remove any remaining cuticle.

E – Eliminate surface contaminants by scrubbing the nail with ScrubFresh™ and a lint-free pad.
P – Purify nail plate layers with ScrubFresh, which will remove oil and debris from the nail plate.
Note: It is not necessary to remove shine from the natural nail plate with a buffer.

STEP 2: Shellac UV Base Coat Application
1. Shake the bottle to blend. 2. Apply one thin layer to each nail surface and extension edge of all five nails on one hand. Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product from the brush. Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the cuticle line. Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and then glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail. Lift the brush and repeat on the opposite side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center. Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear. 3. Cure all five fingers together for ten seconds in the CND UV Lamp*. 4. Repeat the process on the other hand.
STEP 3: Shellac UV Color Coat Application

Solid Color
1. Shake the bottle vigorously to blend.
2. Apply one very thin coat to each nail surface and extension edge of all five nails on one hand. (This layer will be slightly semi-sheer if applied correctly).

Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product from the brush.
Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the cuticle line.
Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail.
Lift the brush and repeat on the other side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center.
Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear.

3. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*
4. Repeat the process on the other hand.
5. Apply a second thin Color Coat to the surface and extension edge of all five nails using the same process. This coat provides full coverage if using an opaque color.
6. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*

French Manicure

1. Shake the bottle vigorously to blend.
2. Start with a sheer pink Shellac UV Color Coat (not white tip): Apply one thin layer of your chosen pink on the nail surface and extension edge of all five nails on the first hand.

Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product from the brush.
Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the cuticle line.
Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail.
Lift the brush and repeat on the other side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center.
Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear.

3. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*
4. Apply a thin coat of white Shellac UV Color Coat to the tips of the nails, in an arched smile line to flatter the nail shape. Detail with the Brisa™ ProSeries Gel Brush dipped in 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) to perfect the smile line.

Note: Applying the white tip on top of a pink base will assure that the detailing brush doesn't remove the critical Base Coat layer during this refinement step.

5. Place all five fingers in the CND UV Lamp and cure for two minutes.*
6. Repeat the process on the other hand.

STEP 4:
Shellac UV Top Coat
Application

1. Shake the bottle to blend.
2. Apply one thin layer to each nail surface and extension edge of all five nails on one hand.

Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product from the brush.
Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the cuticle line.
Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail.
Lift the brush and repeat on the other side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center.
Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear.

3. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*
4. Repeat the process on the other hand.
5. Remove the top film (sticky inhibition layer) with a plastic-backed, lint-free pad soaked with 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol).
6. Condition the nails and surrounding soft tissue with SolarOil™ and send a bottle home with the client for daily conditioning.
7. Pre-book your client for a re-Shellac in two weeks.

Shellac Removal

1. Have the client wash their hands with liquid soap and warm water. Towel dry.
2. Massage CoolBlue™ into your client's hands to sanitize.
3. Wrap each finger with a Shellac Remover Wrap

Saturate the cotton pad on the Shellac Remover Wrap with 99% pure acetone. Place wrap under the finger with the edge of the cotton pad underneath the free edge of the nail
Fold the cotton pad over the top of the nail.
Wrap the long tab around the finger, ensuring a snug fit.
Secure wrap with the adhesive tab.

4. Leave the Shellac Remover Wrap on the finger for ten minutes.
5. Securely grip each finger and apply slight pressure to the fingernail.
6. Using a twisting motion, pull the Shellac Remover Wrap and product from the fingernail. If a significant amount of Shellac remains on the nail (due to extended wear or other unique situations), rewrap the nail and allow acetone to penetrate a few more minutes.
7. If necessary, gently slide off any remaining product with an orangewood stick. Be careful not to scrape away the surface layers of the natural nail plate.
8. Rub the nail with a plastic-backed, lint-free pad soaked with acetone to remove any product residue.

Toenails

STEP 1:

Wash client's feet with liquid soap and warm water, or soak in a pedicure tub with your choice of SpaPedicure™ soak products. Towel dry.
Shape and smooth the nail's extension edge with a Kanga™ File.
Remove any cuticle from the nail plate with CuticleAway and a cuticle pusher.
Cleanse feet with soap and water to neutralize and remove CuticleAway.
Double check for stubborn cuticle and debris by pulling back the lateral folds (sidewalls) of the nails with your fingers and, using a curette, gently remove any remaining cuticle.

E - Eliminate surface contaminants by scrubbing the nail with ScrubFresh™ and a lint-free pad.

Shellac Removal

1. Wash client's feet with liquid soap and warm water or soak in a pedicure tub with your choice of SpaPedicure™ soak products. Towel dry.
2. Massage CoolBlue into the client's feet to sanitize.
3. Wrap the large toenail with a Shellac Remover Wrap and wrap the smaller toes with cotton and foil.

To use the wrap:

Saturate the cotton pad on the Shellac Remover Wrap with 99% pure acetone. Place wrap under the toe with the edge of the cotton pad under the free edge of the nail.
Fold cotton pad over the top of the nail and wrap around toe, ensuring a tight, snug fit.
Wrap the long tab around the toe, ensuring a snug fit.
Secure wrap with adhesive tab.

To use cotton and foil:

Saturate cotton balls with 99% pure acetone.
Place saturated cotton on each small toenail.
Cut a piece of foil large enough to wrap all four smaller toes.
Place foil under toes and wrap toes to secure cotton balls in place on top of nails.

4. Leave the Shellac Remover Wrap and cotton and foil on the toe for ten minutes.
5. Securely grip each toe and apply slight pressure to the toenail.
6. Using a twisting motion, pull the Shellac Remover Wrap or cotton and foil from the toenail.
If a significant amount of Shellac remains on the nail (due to extended wear or other unique situations), rewrap the nail and allow acetone to penetrate a few more minutes.
7. If necessary, gently slide off any remaining product with an orangewood stick. Be careful not to scrape away the surface layers of the natural nail plate.
8. Rub the nail with a plastic-backed, lint-free pad soaked with acetone to remove any product residue.

Liquid & Powder or Gel Enhancements

STEP 1:
Meticulous
Natural Nail Prep

Shellac can be used over Liquid & Powder or Gel Enhancements.

1. Complete fine finishing of the enhancements stopping short of SolarOil™ application.

For Liquid & Powder enhancements, refrain from bringing them to a high shine with a high shine buffer. Leave nails smoothed and refined with a 1200 grit buffer, like the Koala Buffer.
For Brisa Gel enhancements, seal with Brisa Gloss and leave the sticky inhibition layer on the nail.

Do not apply Shellac UV Base Coat, go straight to the Color Coat.

STEP 2:
Shellac UV Color Coat
Application

1. Shake the bottle vigorously to blend.
2. Apply one very thin coat to each nail surface and extension edge of all five nails on one hand. (This layer will be slightly semi-sheer if applied correctly).

Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product from the brush.
Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the cuticle line.
Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail.
Lift the brush and repeat on the other side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center.
Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear.

3. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*

Application

1. Shake the bottle to blend the ingredients.
2. Apply one thin layer of Shellac UV Top Coat to each nail surface and extension edge on all five nails on one hand.

Remove the applicator brush from the bottle and wipe it against the bottle's neck to drain excess product form the brush.
Stay parallel to the natural nail and place the brush in the center of the nail slightly away from the eponychium line.
Gently push the brush toward the cuticle line and glide down one side to the extension edge of the nail.
Lift the brush and repeat on the other side of the nail, followed by the same steps to coat the center.
Be sure to encase the extension edge to ensure long wear.

3. Cure all five nails for two minutes in the CND UV Lamp.*
4. Repeat on the other hand.
5. Remove the top film (sticky inhibition layer) with a plastic-backed, lint-free pad soaked with 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol).

Removal from Enhancements

To remove Shellac from Liquid & Powder or Gel enhancements, buff color off with a 180-grit file such as a Blizzard or Hot Shot File. As with all enhancement rebalances, be careful to avoid filing the finger and natural nail.

Shellac Troubleshooting

Question: Some of my clients are experiencing polish shrinkage around the cuticle. What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Answer: This is a common problem that many nail techs experience. When your client still has some residual oil on their nail bed or in their cuticle, the polish shrinks away and does not adhere to the nail. To fix this problem, be sure to use ScrubFresh as part of the Prep process for the nail. For people with oily nails, try gently buffing the excess oil from the nail plate. Before applying the Shellac Base Coat, thoroughly wipe the nail bed and cuticle with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. Doing these essential steps will decrease the amount of oil on nail bed and, therefore, decrease the chances of polish shrinkage.
Question: I have been following all of the application steps, but my clients’ polish has been bubbling shortly after curing. How can I prevent this from happening?

Answer: 9 out of 10 times, the following 2 steps will remedy the issue of bubbling. First, you must be shaking each bottle of polish – base coat, color coat(s), top coat – for at least 30 seconds before applying to each hand. Shellac must be thoroughly mixed together. Next, make sure that you apply very thin coats of polish. One of the main causes of bubbling is layers that are applied to thickly. The first coat of color polish should be streaky, while the second coat will even the color out. Very thin application is the key to preventing bubbling.
Question: I am experiencing issues with curing the product. Sometimes I need to leave my clients hand in the lamp for 10 minutes. Is the product defective?

Answer: Improper curing can be caused by a variety of issues –
1. Make sure that you are using a 36 watt lamp. If it is less than 36watts, you will need to upgrade.
2. Next, it is essential to understand the make-up of UV lights. They are filled with gases that degrade over time. This is the natural course for UV bulbs, but the degradation increases with elevated temperatures. Even something simply like dust on the bulbs reflects heat back into the bulbs and accelerates the degradation. Every time you turn on your UV lamp, the bulbs are slowly becoming less powerful. To ensure that your clients’ nails are being properly cured every single time, you need to replace your bulbs every 2 months. If you wait any longer, curing times will drastically increase while the curing quality will drastically decrease.
3. You must shake each bottle of Shellac polish for at least 30 seconds before applying it to each hand. Shellac is filled with Solutes that separate over time. If the bottle is not shaken enough, the solutes do not combine properly, therefore changing the formula. If the Shellac formula is altered in any way, it will not cure properly.
4. Shellac must be applied in very, very thin layers. You need to wipe off your brush on the neck of the bottle repeatedly before you apply the polish to the nail. The first color coat will look streaky, the second color coat will look a little better, but then the top coat will pull everything together.
Question: My clients’ nails aren’t lasting for 14 days. Only a few days in, they are experiencing chipping and peeling. What gives?

Answer: There several recommendations to prevent your clients’ nails from chipping –
1. Follow all of the steps above regarding curing. The first step to ensure that the polish stays on your clients’ nails is to make sure that they are being cured properly.
2. Make sure to cap the free edge of the nail for every coat of polish.
3. Keep a tiny free margin around the cuticle and sidewall areas.
4. Shellac is formulated with lacquer, which has dehydrating properties. When the nail becomes dehydrated, it is much more likely to peel. Your clients can prevent this by applying CND Solar Oil to their nails and cuticles every day. It is an excellent item to retail to your clients and they should see a marked difference in the quality of their nails and cuticles.
5. Please also remember, clients who naturally have nails that tend to peel might not be able to use the Shellac polish. We recommended looking into the Gelish line by Hand and Nail Harmony for not only your customers with weaker nails, but all of your clients.
Question: My Shellac got thicker - what happened?

Answer: You are not shaking your Shellac before EACH USE. When Shellac is not in use, the solvents rise to the top of the bottle. Solvents are the reason Shellac stays thin inside the bottle. If the bottle is not shaken prior to use, a disproportionate amount of solvent will be used as the brush is pulled through the top layer of solvent. Additionally, during use, more Solvent can evaporate out of the open bottle. As more solvent is used, the formula becomes off balance and the thicker ingredients that settle to the bottom of the Shellac bottle are left. Overtime, this make Shellac seem thicker which makes it difficult to apply Shellac in thin layers and can lead to under curing and wrinkling. SHAKE... SHAKE... SHAKE the Shellac (prior to every application for 30 seconds.)
Question: Why am I seeing white spots on the nails after removal of Shellac?

Answer: White spots on the nail after removal of Shellac is typically due to slight dehydration of the nails.

Tips & Tricks:
- Clients should be using Solar Oil daily and repeatedly. This will help moisturize their natural nails and keep their natural flexibility. It will also help maintain the natural flexible feeling of Shellac.
- Minimize exposure of acetone by using Shellac Wraps. Soaking the nails and fingertips in a bowl of acetone is excessive exposure to acetone.
- Apply Shellac base coat thin. The thicker you use it the longer it will take to remove.
- If your clients natural nails are overly dry, try a warm Solar Oil soak. Use an oil warmer or place small bowl of Solar Oil in a larger bowl of warm water.Put just enough Solar oil to cover the tips of the fingers. Soak for 5 min after application of Shellac
- When dry spots are found on natural nail after Shellac removal, apply SolarOil and buff with 1200 grit buffer such as CND Koala Buffer. In mild cases, Shellac can then be reapplied. In more severe cases, the client should take a break from wearing Shellac for a few weeks.
- To remove any residual Shellac use an orangewood stick to gently scrape the nail. Do not use metal or hard plastic. Improper scraping may cause damage to the top layer of natural nail, thus making the nails more prone to dehydration.
- Immediately after Shellac removal, wash the client’s hand with plenty of water using mild soap. Strong soap or detergents are also sources of dehydration.
- Do not buff the natural nail prior to application. The top layer of the natural nail is normally more dense or less porous than the other layers and acts as a protecting layer, preventing solvents from penetrating the natural nail and causing excess dehydration.

12)	Is Shellac hypo-allergenic?	Yes, a low level of photo-initiators are utilized in Shellac. Photo-inhibitors can lead to sensitivity with some clients.

13)	Does Shellac bond covalently?	No.

14)	Is there any odor to Shellac?	A very slight odor may be noticeable upon application (Butyl Acetate causes a slight odor) but not nearly as strong as nail polish. After curing in the lamp, a residual odor does not remain.

15)	Does Shellac feel like a nail polish or an enhancement?	The viscosity and fluid application are very similar to nail polish.

16)	Does Shellac removal damage the natural nail?	No. Shellac was developed and tested for years to perfect every aspect of the Shellac process, including removal. However, pre-existing nail conditions (ie. delamination) will remain and Shellac may not be suitable for every client.

17)	Will Shellac last longer than 14 days?	Yes. However it will show growth after 14 days. Removal can be a bit longer after 14 days, as adhesion will increase the longer Shellac is worn.

18)	Will soaps or other personal grooming products affect the wearability of Shellac?	No. Shellac was developed and tested to withstand the rigors of daily wear.

19)	Is it important to "Prep" before Shellac application? Do you need to file the shine from the natural nail surface prior to application?	Yes. It is very important to practice proper "Prep" to ensure long lasting 14-day results. You do not need to remove the shine from the natural nail surface using a file or buffer. Shellac was formulated for 14-day wear and easy removal. Roughing the nail surface is not necessary for longevity and may impact the removal time.

20)	If I file the natural nail before application, will it stay on longer or better?	No. Filing or buffing is not recommended or necessary.

21)	Can nail polish thinner be used? If not, what can be used to thin Shellac?	No. Thinning the product is not recommended & thinner cannot be used without affecting the efficacy of the product.

22)	What happens if you use Shellac with a regular nail polish base coat or top coat?	The product will not cure or work properly. Shellac is designed to work as a system. If all elements of the system are not used together, the product efficacy will be compromised.

23)	How thick should each coat of Shellac be applied?	For best results, each layer of Shellac should be applied very thinly – as thin as nail polish.

24)	What if I experience "wrinkling" during curing?	The application was too thick or the Lamp bulbs may need to be replaced. In some cases, the appearance of wrinkling can be corrected with the Top Coat application.

25)	Can Shellac be used and cured with another brand's Lamp?	No. Shellac was developed and designed to work with the UV output found only with the new CND UV Lamp (or the Brisa™ Lamp). There is no guarantee that Shellac will cure properly or wear well with any other brand of Lamp.

26)	How is the sticky inhibition layer (after curing the Top Coat) removed?	With 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol).

27)	What is the cause if there is cloudiness or lack of shine in the Top Coat finish?	Confirm you are using 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) to remove the inhibition layer. Check the bulbs & the bulb indicator on the new CND UV Lamp to confirm that they are curing at 100%.

28)	How is the orangewood stick used during removal?	To gently push away any remaining residual material off the nail plate.

29)	Can Remove (product remover) be used instead of acetone for removal?	Not recommended, as it will take much longer for removal. Remove was designed to be used with L&P Enhancements which require longer soaking time.

30)	Can cotton & foil be used for Shellac removal?	Shellac Remover Wraps were developed & designed specifically for the Shellac removal process in an effort to minimize acetone exposure to the skin surrounding the nail. In addition, they are aesthetically pleasing, while providing a great, easy, sanitary option. If you run out of Remover Wraps, cotton and foil can be used as a temporary solution.

31)	Is the removal time truly 10 minutes?	Yes. Really!

32)	Should the application and removal process be different for toes?	Very similar. See Step-by-Steps for specific directions.

33)	What are the home care guidelines for Shellac?	Shellac is a professional only product – to be applied and removed at a salon by a trained Nail Professional. It is, however, recommended that clients apply SolarOil™ daily.

34)	Can Shellac be used with enhancements (Liquid & Powder and Gel)?	Yes. See Step-by-Steps for specific directions.

35)	Can I sculpt with Shellac?	No. Shellac has been designed as a Color Coat for natural nails. It is not formulated to change the shape or length of the nail. Enhancements are required for sculpting.

37)	Can nail polish be used over Shellac?	Yes. However it is not recommended if you want to experience one of the key benefits of Shellac: for 14-day wear. Why? Nail polish will begin chipping and wearing before 14 days.

38)	Can Shellac shades be mixed?	No. Each shade is specifically formulated as a standalone color. Mixing of colors will compromise the ratios of reactant ingredients.

42)	What is special about the brush & cap?	Brush: Rectangle, flat shaft provides easy application. Triangle bristle hairs provide even, smooth coverage. Base Coat bristle hairs are shorter to ensure thin application. Cap: Soft-touch matte black cap provides comfort and application ease.

45)	How often should bulbs be replaced in the new CND UV Lamp?	Every 100 hours or every 6 months for optimal curing. The bulb replacement timer counts down from 100 hours. All 4 bulbs should be replaced at the same time (replacement bulbs are sold as 4-pack). If this is not done, the combined output will be below the minimum requirement for optimal curing.

46)	What if I already own the original Brisa™ Lamp? Can I use it for Shellac?	The Shellac UV Color Coat system was originally developed to utilize the same UV output as Brisa Gel, and can be used with the Brisa lamp (4/4/2 cure). Note: Bulbs are NOT interchangeable between Lamps – they have different fittings. Brisa bulbs and liners will continue to be available for purchase.

47)	Can the new CND UV Lamp be used for Brisa Gel as well?	Yes. The new CND UV Lamp was designed to work with both the Shellac and Brisa Gel systems.

48)	How many watts is the new CND UV Lamp?	36 total watts (4 bulbs x 9 watts/each).

49)	How can the output with 4 bulbs (new CND UV Lamp) be the same as 3 bulbs (original Brisa Lamp)?	Wattage = power. UV output = energy. Output is the combination of the number of bulbs, geometric placement of the bulbs & the mirrors inside the lamp. The design of the new Lamp yields the same output as the Brisa Lamp. The higher the output, the more effective the cure, which allows for lower levels of Photo-initiators to help eliminate shrinking & burning.

50)	How do you remove the top of the new CND UV Lamp to replace the bulbs?	Place thumbs inside both sides of the lamp opening and push out. Lift the top up and out.

51)	Can the new CND UV Lamp be used for pedicures?	Yes. The removable tray inside the lamp easily lifts up and out to allow a comfortable fit for most feet.

52)	Can the new CND UV Lamp be left plugged into the electrical outlet at all times without damage?	Yes, however, operating instructions specifically recommend to unplug when not in use.
