Often called "Foo Dogs" in the West, these statues actually represent guardian lions and were traditionally placed on either side of an entry doorway to protect the occupants within. The powerful male lion rests his paw on top of an orb symbolizing the world while his nurturing female companion gently holds a playful cub.
